It is 30th June, and we are at the half way point in the year.
How quickly this year has flown by! Having recently suffered the sad loss of a friend, I am reminded more than ever before of the futility and fragility of our lives.
My friend Albert Foong who writes some wonderful stuff at “The Urban Monk” recently put out a challenge to other bloggers about what they would say in their last ever blog. He asked that rather than thinking about the last blog before death, to instead imagine the bloggosphere was coming to an end. In return Albert is donating at least $500 for charity.
Just what would my last ever message be to the world? What one last gem would I want to leave my readers?
Ok so this is the scene. The blogosphere is ending. No more blogs. Blog apocalypse. The internet is still working, the world is fine. And this is my last ever blog:-
As I am writing this, there has been a major terrorist incident at Glasgow airport and only yesterday two major car bombs were discovered in London. A
t the same time, as usual there were numerous deaths all around the world today through war, famine and drought. Somehow I just think that we have lost our way. The world isn’t working right now as we threaten to bomb each other into oblivion.
What is truly missing is compassion. I sincerely believe that if people take this one thing to heart, the whole world will evolve.
My last ever message which I hope that the world will take to heart is that compassion for ourselves and others will rapidly change the world for the better.
Compassion is about putting yourself in the shoes of the other person and seeing the world from their perspective. It is about feeling their pain and empowering them to be their best. It is not about pity or patronizing.
“Have compassion for all beings, rich and poor alike – each has their suffering. Some suffer too much, others too little.” – Buddha
“Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.” – Dalai Lama
I strongly feel that it is high time we really questioned how we are living our lives and treating our fellow human beings and the planet. Just how can we learn to treat each other with more kindness, care, consideration and dare I say it with love?
How can we learn from the events of the last few years to bring more compassion into the world?
